Faces of Optery is a series highlighting the people behind Optery’s mission to help individuals, families, and businesses minimize exposed personal information online and reduce the risk of cyber and physical threats.
From Customer to Champion: Meet the Sales Leader Helping Organizations Protect Their People
In this story, Director of Sales Dan Cunnane shares how being an Optery customer first shaped his belief in the company, why customer Exposure Reports are such a powerful part of business conversations, and how a “do it right” mindset guides his work with enterprise customers.

Before joining Optery, Dan already believed in the product.
He was an Optery customer first, which gave him firsthand experience with the problem Optery was built to solve: most people do not realize how much of their personal information is exposed across data broker and people-search sites. Even fewer understand how that information can be used by bad actors for phishing, smishing, identity theft, fraud, and other threats.
Today, as Director of Sales, Dan helps grow Optery for Business by working with enterprises to remove employees’ personally identifiable information from the open web.
For Dan, the customer experience often starts with a moment of surprise.
Dan says one of the most consistent moments in business conversations is when a customer runs a free Exposure Report and sees how many data broker and people-search sites are exposing their information online. Unlike any other data broker removal service, Optery typically uncovers ~100 exposed profiles per person, and provides screenshots of these exposures and links to results. That kind of discovery helps make the problem concrete. It shows organizations that exposed employee data is not an abstract privacy issue. It is visible, searchable, and actionable.
Dan has also been struck by how quickly Optery has grown, reflecting rising demand from organizations looking to reduce their personal data exposure on a scale that only Optery can deliver.
Before entering cybersecurity, Dan was on a very different path. He originally started as a sports writer and later considered going to law school to become a sports agent. That background still shows up outside of work, where he remains a serious sports fan with interests in golf, sports memorabilia, sports cards, sneakers, and White Sox games.

His professional principle is straightforward: if you are going to do something, do it right.
For Dan, that means not leaving things to chance and doing the work in a way that avoids regret later, whether he is leading a project or supporting a client.
Dan’s top security advice is to reduce the personal information attackers can use to target you, and protect the accounts they may try to access. That starts with understanding how much personally identifiable information is available online and taking steps to remove it from data broker and people-search sites. It also means using strong, unique passwords and never reusing the same password across accounts. If one account is compromised and the same password is used elsewhere, the risk can spread quickly.
When he is not working with enterprise customers, Dan is likely watching a White Sox game, playing golf, collecting sports cards or sneakers, revisiting The Dark Knight, or reading about basketball.
His favorite quote comes from Kobe Bryant: “Everything negative — pressure, challenges — is all an opportunity for me to rise.”
It is a fitting line for Dan, who brings that same competitive mindset to his work at Optery. For him, pressure is a reason to prepare, follow through, and make sure the job is done right.
