Consumer Technology: Expands Personal Data Removal Across Its Workforce with Optery

A large consumer technology company was already providing personal data removal to a small group of senior executives and their spouses when its security team decided the protection should extend further.

The initial concern was physical safety. Employees in Trust & Safety, Customer Care, Communications, Legal, Security, and other functions could face threats or harassment from disgruntled customers or users. If their home addresses, phone numbers, family information, or other personal details were readily available through data brokers and people-search sites, those interactions could follow them outside of work.

The company selected Optery for Business to reduce that exposure across a much broader group of employees.

Protecting employees based on risk

The company had previously covered approximately 20 executives and spouses through another provider. With Optery, it expanded protection to hundreds of employees across senior leadership, Trust & Safety, Customer Care, Legal, IT, Networking, Cybersecurity, and other functions.

As one member of the security team explained: “I’ve always considered PII management to be the backbone of a really good protective intelligence team. You remove that information online and it’s harder for a bad actor to target your employees and executives.”

By 2025, the team described Optery as its “first mode of response” when an employee was being contacted personally or when a home address or other sensitive information was exposed online.

Demand for coverage grew across the company

Security incidents reinforced the need for broader coverage.

In one case, members of the cybersecurity team were being contacted through both their work accounts and personal channels. The security team received more than 100 requests for Optery access. A separate incident led another part of the company to seek protection for a larger group of employees.

As more employees requested coverage, the list of protected roles became increasingly broad. The company initially made Optery available within one brand and later expanded access across its other brands.

The program administrator explained: “We got to the point where now we have so many ‘random titles’ that have Optery. It just seems silly to not protect some and you know cover others.”

One security leader summarized the team’s view simply: “Everybody should be covered by this. It shouldn’t be a question.”

More than 53,000 exposed profiles removed

The program has also produced measurable results.

As of October 2026, Optery had removed 53,326 exposed profiles and conducted 2.24 million scans for participating employees. Optery’s reporting estimates that automation of the removal work has saved the equivalent of approximately four years of manual effort.

The company’s protective intelligence team has seen the reduction in data broker exposure in its own work.

Discussing the company’s CEO, one team member said: “We’ve seen total improvement with our CEO. Everything that seems to be available about him right now is not data broker related.”

A separate executive risk assessment produced a similar result: “It was wild to see how little was out there, and that’s just attributed to Optery.”

The team has also seen exposure increase after coverage ends. Some executives who left the company and were removed from Optery later reported that more personal information had started appearing online again.

“Once they left the company, and we had to take them out of Optery, they’ve kind of seen an uptick again… So it’s definitely effective.”

The Optery Advantage

Optery for Business has become part of the company’s protective security response, helping the team reduce personal data exposure for employees before that information can be used to target them.

The company is now working to make personal data removal available even more broadly across its workforce.

The program administrator summed up her experience with Optery: “You guys are still my favorite vendor to work with.”
